Myostatin (also known as growth differentiation factor 8, abbreviated as GDF-8) is a myokine, a protein produced and released by cells that acts on muscle cells autocrine function to inhibit muscle development: growth and differentiation in human muscle cells. It is encoded by the MSTN gene. Myostatin is a secreted growth differentiation factor, is a member of the transforming growth factor beta protein family.
 
GDF-8 / myostatin, myostatin deficient animals, or the treatment of myoblasts with a 
significant increase in muscle activity. Furthermore, mutations in the two copies of the individual myostatin gene were significantly more muscular than normal. Blocking the activity of myostatin may be used in the treatment of diseases such as muscle atrophy and muscle atrophy.

The human myostatin consists of two identical subunits, each consisting of 109 residues (the NCBI database claims the human myostatin long 375 residue), which has a molecular weight of 25.0 kDa. Total protein is inactive until the NH2-terminal protease cleaves, or the "pro-domain" moiety of 
the molecule, resulting in an active COOH-terminal dimer, myostatin binding to the Nandrolone 
II-type receptor, resulting in Recruitment of the coreceptor Alk-3 or Alk-4. 
This coreceptor then initiates cell signal cascades in the muscle, including transcription factors 
that activate the SMAD family - SMAD2 and SMAD3. These factors induce myostatin-specific gene 
regulation. When applied to myoblasts, myostatin inhibits its differentiation into mature muscle
fibers.


Myostatin also inhibits a protein kinase that is sufficient to cause muscle hypertrophy by kinases that are activated by protein synthesis. However, Akt is not responsible for all observed muscle hyperthrophic effects and therefore IU inhibits myostatin-mediated behavior in two ways: by inhibiting muscle differentiation, by inhibiting Akt-induced protein synthesis.
