Myostatin (also known as growth differentiation factor 8, abbreviated as GDF-8) is a myokine, a protein produced and released by cells that acts on muscle cells autocrine function to inhibit muscle development: growth and differentiation in human muscle cells. It is encoded by the MSTN gene. Myostatin is a secreted growth differentiation factor, is a member of the transforming growth factor beta protein family.

fibers.
Myostatin also inhibits a protein kinase that is sufficient to cause muscle hypertrophy by kinases that are activated by protein synthesis. However, Akt is not responsible for all observed muscle hyperthrophic effects and therefore IU inhibits myostatin-mediated behavior in two ways: by inhibiting muscle differentiation, by inhibiting Akt-induced protein synthesis.
