Scientists of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences announced a new scientific research recently. They have taken the lead in the world to cultivate potatoes that can automatically kill pests. To date, a pest known as the potato beetle is the most troublesome for farmers because they destroy large amounts of potato every year, causing huge economic losses to agriculture. A new type of genetically modified potato recently cultivated by Belarusian scientists can specifically kill this beetle. At present, the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences is conducting trial planting of the new potato in the field. If all goes well, Belarus will take the lead in promoting the genetically modified potato in large areas in the world.
