Japan has developed high-yield hard-leaved rice

More than half of the world’s population consumes rice. The long paddy rice flourished in shallow wetlands and its seeds sustain the survival of several generations. Since the 1960s, researchers have greatly increased the yield of rice after applying fertilizer, thus effectively avoiding famine. Now scientists have improved rice again. Tomoaki Sakamoto and other researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan tested 34 genetically modified rice. One of the rice varieties lacks the OsDWARF4 gene, which controls the development of steroids associated with development. After removing the OsDWARF4 gene, the plant leaves will become stiff, but it will still grow normally and will not affect the flowering or even the final seeding. Researchers have published the research report in the "Natural Biotechnology" online version. Scientists have been searching for such hard-leaved rice, which they believe is conducive to grain production. Because hard leaves allow light to reach the bottom of the plant, photosynthesis is enhanced, ultimately increasing grain production. Another advantage of this type of rice is that they can be planted closer together without interfering with each other. Some people have recently tried to get this kind of rice by removing special genes, but the plants that grow out are very short and have some bad seeds. In the absence of fertilizer, the output of the new hard-leaved rice is 30% higher than that of ordinary rice.
