Schwarz Roy, of the University of California, San Francisco, who is responsible for the study, said the artificial kidney contains thousands of microfilters and bioreactors that filter toxins in the blood, mimicking the metabolic functions and water balance of real kidneys. . Previously, the researchers conducted experiments on an external model of room size, and the results showed that the therapy was initially successful and could be effectively operated.
To achieve the ultimate goal of application on the human body, the researchers plan to shrink the huge device to the size of a coffee cup through silicon manufacturing technology and a specially designed spacer to help the growth of living kidney cells. Researchers will also use tissue engineering methods to culture tubular cells to provide other functions necessary for healthy kidneys. The entire process runs under the blood pressure of the human body, eliminating the need for pumps and any power supply. If the technology is implemented, the patient will live a normal life without taking any immunosuppressive drugs.
Roy said that the team has established a viable animal model and is working to improve it to make it more suitable for humans. This artificial kidney is expected to enter clinical trials in the next 5 to 7 years.
It is understood that there are only about 2,000 kidney transplants in the UK each year, less than one-third of the total number of transplant patients. Another alternative to kidney transplantation is hemodialysis. However, in general, patients need to dialysis 3 times a week for 3 hours to 5 hours, which not only consumes a lot of time for patients, but also increases huge medical expenses.
Roy said that nearly 45,000 adult patients in the UK are required to undergo hemodialysis each year, but this therapy can only replace 13% of kidney function. Long-term dialysis not only exhausts the patients, but also completely protects their health. Statistics show that only 35% of patients receiving dialysis survive more than 5 years.
