Japan cultivated the world’s first blue rose

After 14 years of dedicated research, Suntory Co., Ltd. from Japan has successfully created the world’s first true blue rose by introducing genes responsible for blue pigments found in pansies. The company is now preparing to launch this groundbreaking flower within the next four years. According to a report by Agence France-Presse on June 30, a company representative stated at a press conference: “Growing a blue rose was once thought to be impossible, but we never gave up and eventually succeeded.” While traditional methods have produced roses that are often mistaken for blue, most of them actually appear purple or gray due to the presence of red or orange pigments. These colors don’t match the true blue hue that nature doesn’t naturally produce. Researchers explain that the new "blue rose" gets its color entirely from a specific pigment, which does not exist in nature. However, the current version developed by Suntory still appears more purple than blue. In response, company officials admitted that there is still a long way to go before achieving a genuine sky-blue rose. A senior technical expert from the Suntory Institute said, “Technically, we’ve successfully created blue roses because the flowers now contain blue pigments. But to make people truly recognize it as sky blue, we still have a lot of work ahead.” The company also mentioned that it will take at least two and a half years to test whether the rose can grow safely and consistently in natural environments. This long-term process highlights the complexity of the project and the commitment required to bring a truly blue rose to market. With continued efforts, Suntory aims to revolutionize the floral industry and offer a unique product that has captivated gardeners and flower lovers for decades.
