British Food Standards Agency to amend feed and food regulation regulations

Food Partner Network News, September 20, 2010 The Food Standards Agency (FSA) of the United Kingdom decided to consult with its proposal for amendments to the Regulation of Feed and Food Regulations at its July 2010 meeting.

According to EU law, companies that produce animal-derived products must register or, if appropriate, have the approval of the competent authority to sell food. The British Food Standards Agency is responsible for the approval of slaughtering, cutting, and processing departments within its jurisdiction.

According to the current regulations, if a food business operator’s application is to be rejected or cancelled, the company can file a complaint. Businesses can continue production operations while waiting for the outcome of the appeal.

In order to reduce the risk to public health, the UK Food Standards Agency proposes to be consistent with the EU laws and remove the clauses that can continue production operations during the appeal period.

The proposal was solicited for 12 weeks, ending on December 10.
