The successful development of the new bactericide "Loncobacteri (thiaca copper)"

At present, the primary agents used in China to manage bacterial diseases in crops are agricultural antibiotics, such as Yeqingshuang, and inorganic copper-based formulations. However, the effectiveness of these products has declined over time due to issues like long-term usage (over 20 years), leading to increasing resistance among pathogens. Agricultural antibiotics and Yeqingshuang have become less effective, while inorganic copper compounds often cause phytotoxicity and may promote the growth of pests when applied in large quantities. Additionally, these products suffer from poor solubility, limited mixing capabilities, and inconvenient application methods, which further restrict their use. As a result, there is currently no highly effective and reliable agent available for controlling bacterial diseases in key crops such as rice, citrus, vegetables, and fruits. This has created an urgent need for new, efficient, and environmentally friendly bactericides that can address these challenges effectively. The development of a novel bactericidal agent called "Lonicobacteri (Thiococcus Copper)" has successfully addressed this critical gap. Known as "Thiococcus Copper," its chemical name is 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole copper. It was developed by Zhejiang Longwan Chemical Co., Ltd., leveraging their extensive research in thiazole-based pesticides. The product received a national invention patent in 1999 (Patent No. ZL99773411.7) and was granted a pesticide registration certificate and production approval in 2000. Market potential for this product is significant. In China, bacterial diseases affect approximately 30 million mu of farmland, with citrus canker and scab affecting around 23 million mu. Other bacterial diseases in economically important crops—such as vegetables, fruits, fruit trees, flowers, nursery stock, and horticultural plants—are also on the rise, covering about 110 million mu. It is estimated that roughly 26,500 tons of antibacterial agents are needed annually for disease control. Lonicobacteri demonstrates strong curative and preventive effects against several major bacterial diseases, including rice bacterial leaf streak, bacterial leaf blight, citrus canker, scab, and cucumber bacterial leaf spot. Its efficacy surpasses that of commonly used agents like Yeqingshuang, agricultural antibiotics, and inorganic copper preparations. The product brings substantial social, economic, and ecological benefits. Field trials have shown that the cost-to-output ratio for farmers using Lonicobacteri ranges from 1:8 to 1:10, indicating high economic returns and broad application potential. As a result, it has become a preferred choice for farmers seeking effective solutions to bacterial crop diseases. Through the ongoing "Industrialized Development of Pesticide Lonicobacteri" project, the product will transition from provisional registration (LS) to official registration (PD). This will expand its bactericidal spectrum, increase the range of crops it can be applied to—from 3 to 6—and enhance the number of diseases it can control—from 5 to 8. New formulations, such as 20% WDG compatible with mancozeb and other fungicides, have been developed. With nationwide promotion, annual sales are expected to reach over 1,000 tons, generating more than 30 million yuan in revenue. Lonicobacteri is set to become a leading agent in the prevention and control of bacterial diseases in crops. Additionally, it has obtained pesticide registration certificates in the Philippines and Vietnam, marking its international expansion.
