On overcast days, while maintaining warmth is essential, maximizing light exposure is equally important. Try to use the available scattered light from cloudy days as much as possible. If the temperature doesn’t drop after removing the straw curtain, it should be fully uncovered. Even if the outside temperature is low and the indoor temperature drops slightly after uncovering, the curtains should still be opened before and after noon for 30 minutes to an hour, allowing the plants to receive some light. Alternatively, the back cover can be removed to ensure daily light exposure. If temperatures remain extremely low for a long time and the indoor temperature continues to fall, heating should be provided before the temperature drops to a level that could harm plant growth. Aim to raise the temperature to between 13°C and 15°C to avoid cold stress on the crops.

When a cold snap occurs and temperatures drop rapidly, additional heat should be added based on the greenhouse’s insulation and the type of crops being grown. Temporary shelters, such as small sheds, can be erected, and materials like paper, non-woven fabric, old plastic sheets, or hay bales can be used to provide extra insulation. These should be placed carefully to avoid smoke entering the greenhouse. The goal of supplementary heating is to prevent frost damage without raising the indoor temperature too high, as excessive heat can interfere with normal plant development.

If snow falls but the temperature isn’t very low, the straw mats can be rolled up and left in place once the snow stops. However, if snowfall coincides with a drop in temperature, rolling up the mats is not advisable. During heavy snowstorms, snow should be removed using a snowboard to prevent excessive accumulation, especially at night. Prompt snow removal is essential to avoid structural damage to the greenhouse.

After a long period of continuous cloudiness, clear days often follow. However, when the straw mats are removed, plants may experience water imbalance, leading to wilting. In severe cases, damage to the growing tips can result in total crop loss. To prevent this, gradual acclimatization is necessary. Allow the plants to slowly adjust to sunlight in the early morning. If wilting occurs, the mats should be re-covered immediately, or a foliar spray can be applied to help restore the water balance and reduce stress on the plants.
