Precautions for raising good pheasants in summer

Pheasants are rare and wild birds known for their rapid growth, strong disease resistance, and high-quality meat. Their flesh is not only tender and flavorful but also rich in nutrients, with a unique aroma that sets them apart from other poultry. The crude protein content of pheasant meat is two to three times higher than that of broilers, and it contains all essential amino acids. Compared to chicken, pheasant meat has significantly lower fat and cholesterol levels. Additionally, it is rich in iron, containing 10 to 15 times more iron than other poultry. Pheasant meat is not only delicious but also offers great health benefits, including anti-cancer properties. After conducting a thorough market survey, farmer Bai Xuezeng from Jinwan Village, Xindian Town, Xinye County, Henan Province, discovered that pheasants were highly popular among consumers. In 1997, he established a pheasant breeding farm, implementing scientific management throughout the entire process—from hatching, brooding, fast growth, feeding, and disease prevention. This led to the formation of an integrated production and supply chain. Within just two years, the farm expanded into one of the largest pheasant breeding bases in southern Henan, covering 6,000 square meters and earning the title of "King of Chickens." In summer, raising healthy pheasants in the hot weather can be a challenge for many farmers. Bai Xuezeng shared his own successful methods: 1. **Ventilation and Cooling**: During the hot season, it's crucial to create a comfortable environment for pheasants. If possible, relocate the coop to a shaded, tree-covered area. If relocation isn't feasible, install a shade canopy to block direct sunlight. Pheasants are often raised outdoors during summer, using a combination of open spaces and sheltered areas. The housing should remain well-ventilated and fresh at all times. 2. **Clean Drinking Water**: High temperatures in summer make water prone to contamination. Change the water twice daily, and when doing so, clean the water troughs with a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution. Always ensure there is an ample supply of clean drinking water available. Never cut off the water supply. When temperatures exceed 35°C, add 3% white sugar to the water to help lower body temperature and prevent heatstroke. 3. **Disease Prevention**: Maintaining a clean chicken house is the first line of defense against disease. Regular cleaning combined with weekly spraying of disinfectants like 100 toxin or sterilizer (diluted 1:1000) helps keep the environment safe. Remove feeders and drinkers before spraying. Additionally, supplement feed with 0.04% oxytetracycline twice a week, and provide 10,000 units of penicillin per bird once a week to enhance disease resistance. 4. **Lighting and Feeding**: Pheasants tend to eat most during early morning and late evening. Turn on the lights two hours before dawn to provide food and water. At night, keep the lights on for 2–3 hours. Ensure sufficient feed and water during these periods, and use soft lighting—around 3–4 watts per square meter. Feed pheasants 3–4 times a day, with longer intervals between meals. The feed should be nutritionally balanced, containing 2700–2750 kcal of metabolizable energy, over 23% crude protein, complete essential amino acids, and include trace elements and green feed for optimal health.
