Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Apple Tree Rot Disease

Apple tree rot is a serious fruit tree disease that occurs widely, causes significant damage, and leads to substantial economic losses. Trees in the fruiting stage or those growing on sloped areas are particularly susceptible. In mild cases, the disease can cause the death of large branches, leading to a sharp decline in yield, poor fruit quality, and a shortened fruiting period. In severe cases, the main trunk may die, and entire orchards can be destroyed. Therefore, it's essential to implement comprehensive management strategies. The following points should be carefully addressed: First, proper pruning, thinning, and fruit thinning are crucial. Using scientific pruning techniques helps develop a well-structured tree, promoting healthy growth. At the same time, thinning fruits ensures balanced development, prevents alternate bearing, and enhances the tree’s resistance to diseases. Second, it's important to manage other pests and diseases such as apple aphids, winged moths, and Tarnished Plant Bugs. Controlling these pests reduces nutrient loss and blocks potential entry points for the rot disease, strengthening the tree's defenses. Third, treat affected areas by scraping and applying a disinfectant. In mid to late June or late October, remove the old bark from the trunk or main branches until the green, living tissue is exposed. Carefully scrape away any decayed tissue, then apply a 50-fold dilution of arsenic-based disinfectant to the treated area to prevent further infection. Fourth, conduct dormant season eradication. Before bud break, spray a 4–5 degree lime sulfur solution on the trees to prevent most diseases. Alternatively, use a 100-fold dilution of 40% Fumei arsenic, focusing on larger branches and trunks where eggs might be present. Pesticides must be applied before flowering to avoid phytotoxicity. Additionally, increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizer application to ensure strong, healthy tree growth.
