What to do if wheat is lying

After wheat leaves overlap, it significantly affects photosynthesis and hinders the transport of nutrients and water within the plant. This can have a major impact on yield, making lodging one of the biggest challenges in achieving high productivity. In addition, the high humidity, poor ventilation, and reduced light penetration in the field create ideal conditions for diseases such as powdery mildew, stripe rust, head blight, and sheath blight to develop. There are two main types of wheat lodging: early lodging and late lodging. Early lodging occurs before the grain-filling stage and is often referred to as “head light.” In many cases, the plants can recover to some extent. However, late lodging happens during the grain-filling period and is known as “head weight.” At this stage, recovery is more difficult, and usually only the ear and the part of the stem just below the ear can be lifted. To minimize yield loss, it's crucial to take timely remedial actions. First, when it rains, gently shake off excess moisture from the stems and leaves using bamboo rafts. This helps reduce pressure and encourages the plants to stand upright. Avoid excessive disturbance or trying to lift the plants by hand, as this may cause further damage. Second, applying potassium dihydrogen phosphate at a rate of 150–200 grams per acre, or using 50–60 kg of a 16% plant ash extract, can help promote growth and improve grain filling. These treatments support the plant’s ability to recover and increase both grain number and weight. Third, it's essential to strengthen disease prevention and control. If no serious diseases occur after lodging, mild cases generally have minimal impact on yield. However, heavy lodging can still lead to some losses. But if diseases spread unchecked, the situation can worsen rapidly. Therefore, timely monitoring and treatment of pests and diseases that arise due to lodging are critical in reducing overall losses and ensuring better harvest outcomes.
