What to do if wheat is lying

Wheat lodging, which occurs when the leaves overlap, significantly affects photosynthesis and hinders the movement of nutrients and water within the plant. This condition can severely impact yield and is one of the major challenges in achieving high productivity. In addition, the high humidity, poor air circulation, and reduced light penetration in the field create ideal conditions for diseases such as powdery mildew, stripe rust, head blight, and sheath blight to develop. There are two main types of wheat lodging: early lodging and late lodging. Early lodging occurs before the grain-filling stage and usually allows some recovery, especially if the plant's "head" (the top part with the grains) can still stand upright. However, late lodging happens during the later stages of grain development, when the weight of the head makes it difficult for the plant to recover fully. In such cases, only the ear and the stem below it might be lifted, while the rest remains bent or flat on the ground. To minimize the damage caused by lodging, several timely measures should be taken. First, after rainfall, gently shaking the wheat stems and leaves using bamboo rafts can help remove excess water and reduce pressure, allowing the plants to stand up more easily. However, avoid excessive handling or disturbing the plants in a backward direction, and never use your hands to lift or bundle them, as this could cause further damage. Second, applying potassium dihydrogen phosphate at a rate of 150–200 grams per acre, or spraying a 50–60 kg solution of 16% plant ash extract, can promote better growth and grain filling. These treatments help strengthen the plant and improve its ability to recover. Third, it’s crucial to monitor and manage disease outbreaks. While mild lodging typically has minimal impact on yield, severe lodging may even lead to some unexpected gains if no diseases occur. However, if diseases spread unchecked, the situation can worsen significantly. Therefore, proactive disease control is essential to reduce losses and ensure healthier harvests. By taking these steps, farmers can better manage the effects of lodging and protect their crops.
