The scientific name of this beautiful flowering tree is *Bauhinia variegata*, commonly known as the Buddhist Bauhinia. It is also referred to by several other names, including Safflower, Bauhinia, and Safflower Crocodile. Belonging to the legume family, it is a semi-evergreen tree that typically grows up to about 8 meters in height. The bark is grayish-brown, featuring shallow fissures and noticeable lenticels, giving it a distinctive texture.
The leaves are arranged alternately along the branches and are wider than they are long. They are entire (without notches), with two distinct clefts at the top, and have a heart-shaped base, resembling the shape of a sheep’s hoof. The upper surface of the leaves is smooth and dark green, while the underside is covered with fine hairs, adding to its visual appeal.
This species produces short racemes of flowers, which are purplish in color and emit a pleasant fragrance. The blooming season usually starts in September and continues through February, making it a striking feature in urban landscapes during the cooler months.
