Spartina alterniflora

It has been included in the first batch of invasive alien species in China.

Scientific name Spartina alterniflora Loisel.

English name Smooth Cord-grass

Taxonomic status: Gramineae, Spartina (a species of rice grass).

Identification characteristics: The underground part is usually composed of short, thin fibrous roots and long, thick underground stems (rhizome). The root system is well developed, and it is often densely covered in soil layers 30 cm deep underground, sometimes as deep as 50-100 cm. Plant stems are tough, upright, up to 1-3 m in diameter and 1 cm in diameter. Stem joints with leaf sheaths, leaf axils buds. Leaves alternate, long needle-shaped, up to 90 cm in length, 1.5? 2 cm in width, with salt glands, the salt absorbed by the roots are mostly excreted by the salt gland, so the surface of the leaves often have a white powder of salt cream. Panicles 20–45 cm long, with 10–20 spike-shaped racemes, 16–24 spikelets, lateral spikelets flat, ca. 1 cm; bisexual flowers; smooth ovary, long stigma, white Feathale; 3 stamens, longitudinally dehiscent at maturity of anther, pollen yellow. Seeds usually mature between 8 and 12 months, with caryopsis 0.8 to 1.5 cm long and embryos pale green or wax yellow.

Reproductive methods: sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. Its propagules include seeds, rhizomes and broken plants.

Biological characteristics: Perennial herb, born in the intertidal zone. The plants are salt tolerant and flood resistant. Seeds can spread with the storm. In the beach soil where the roots are distributed up to 60cm deep, individual plants can reproduce tens or even hundreds of plants in a year.

Origin: Coast of the United States southeast; naturalization in western United States and European coast

China Distribution Status: Shanghai (Chongming Island), Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hong Kong

The introduction of diffusion causes and hazards: introduced in 1979, has achieved certain economic benefits. However, in recent years, it has become a nuisance in some places. It manifests itself in: (1) disrupting habitats of coastal organisms and affecting beach culture; (2) clogging waterways and affecting vessel departure; (3) affecting seawater exchange capacity and causing water quality to decline. And induced red tides; (4) threatened the indigenous coastal ecosystem, resulting in the disappearance of large areas of mangroves

Control methods: Herbicides can remove parts above the surface, but they are less effective for the seeds and root systems in the mudflat.

Professor Zhang Liquan of the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research at East China Normal University recently adopted the new comprehensive physical control technology of “castration+water level control” to successfully control the wild growth of the invasive species “Spartina alterniflora” in the Dongtan Nature Reserve in Shanghai. spread.

Researchers in Guangdong have discovered that the planting of S. apetala from Bangladesh and the Chinese seaweed can restrain the growth of S. alterniflora without affecting the local ecological chain.
