Shoot dry planting technology

Shanpo fan and Fanzi grass, commonly known as dry shoots, are herbaceous plants that typically grow between 50 to 120 centimeters in height. Their underground rhizomes are widely used in traditional medicine. These plants are quite adaptable and can thrive in a variety of soil types, as they are drought-resistant and able to withstand cold temperatures. As a result, they can be cultivated across the entire country.

There are two main planting seasons: autumn and spring sowing. The recommended row spacing is 35 centimeters, with furrows about 2 centimeters deep. After sowing the seeds, the soil should be carefully covered and gently pressed down. Seedlings from autumn planting usually do not emerge until early spring of the following year, while spring-sown seeds typically sprout within 12 to 15 days after proper seed treatment. To improve germination, the seeds should first be soaked in water for two days, then mixed with a small amount of sand and kept in a warm, moist environment indoors. Once they begin to germinate, they can be sown directly in the field, ensuring faster and more uniform sprouting.

Field management is essential for healthy growth. Once the seedlings start blooming, it's important to thin out dense areas and remove any overcrowded plants. If the plants bolt (produce flowers), these should be cut off promptly to encourage root development rather than flowering.

Harvesting typically occurs after the plants have grown for 2 to 3 years, though they can be harvested multiple times over several years. The rhizomes are best dug up at the end of autumn. After removing the fibrous roots, the rhizomes are cleaned and dried for use as medicinal herbs. Proper drying ensures better preservation and potency of the final product.
