Big difference in temperature between autumn and winter
Newborn piglets have an underdeveloped thermoregulatory system, making them highly susceptible to cold. Therefore, maintaining a warm and stable environment is crucial for their health and survival. For the first 1 to 3 days, the ideal temperature should be between 30°C and 32°C. From day 4 to 7, it should gradually decrease to 28°C to 30°C, and by the time they are 15 to 30 days old, the temperature should be maintained at 22°C to 25°C. Exposure to low temperatures can lead to serious issues such as colds, pneumonia, or even death due to hypothermia. To ensure proper warmth, it's essential to use an incubator equipped with infrared lamps or electric heating pads. Piglets should always be kept in these warm areas, especially during the first few days after birth.
As the temperature difference between day and night increases after the Mid-Autumn Festival, it becomes even more important to manage the environment carefully. At night, doors and windows of the nursery and farrowing houses should be closed properly to maintain a stable temperature. The overall temperature inside the pig house should stay above 22°C, while newly weaned piglets require a slightly warmer environment, around 26°C. After each feeding, piglets should be returned to the incubator or a warm area to avoid exposure to cold air.
In intensive pig farms, diseases like porcine epidemic diarrhea, transmissible gastroenteritis, and pseudorabies are more common during winter. To prevent these, all sows should receive a secondary vaccine against porcine epidemic diarrhea and transmissible gastroenteritis in late autumn. Before vaccination, sows should also be given inactivated oil emulsion vaccines and swine fever vaccines for pseudorabies. The vaccination process follows the same method as routine immunization. Boars should also be vaccinated separately during this period. In addition, respiratory diseases such as porcine enzootic pneumonia, contagious pleuropneumonia, and Eperythrozoonosis are more prevalent in autumn and winter. Regular application of insecticides is necessary to control pests that may harm the herd. Pigs showing signs of rickets should be treated promptly. To support overall health, oxytetracycline can be added to feed at a rate of 600 grams per 1000 kilograms of feed.
