Shoot dry planting technology

The dry shoots of this plant are commonly known as Shanpo fan or Fanzi grass, and they typically grow to a height of 50 to 120 cm. The tubers are widely used in traditional medicine. This plant is not very particular about soil conditions and can thrive in a variety of soils. It is highly drought-resistant and can survive in cold climates, making it adaptable to growing conditions across the entire country. Planting can be done either in autumn or spring. The recommended row spacing is 35 cm, with furrows about 2 cm deep. After spreading the seeds evenly, the soil should be covered and gently pressed down. Seedlings from autumn planting usually do not emerge during the same year but will appear in early spring of the following year. For spring planting, seedlings generally emerge within 12 to 15 days after treatment. To improve germination, seeds should first be soaked in water for two days, then mixed with a small amount of sand and placed in a warm, moist environment indoors. Once the seeds begin to sprout, they can be sown directly into the field, ensuring faster and more uniform emergence. Field management is crucial for healthy growth. Once the seedlings start blooming, it's important to thin out crowded areas and open up the rows to allow better air circulation and light penetration. If the plants begin to bolt (produce flowering stems), these should be removed promptly to encourage root development instead of flowering. Harvesting typically occurs after the plant has grown for 2 to 3 years, though it can be harvested multiple times over several years. The rhizomes are best dug up at the end of autumn. After digging, the fibrous roots are removed, and the remaining parts are dried thoroughly before being used as medicinal herbs. Proper drying ensures the quality and potency of the final product.
