After wheat harvest, kind of Achyranthes

Achyranthes is a perennial herb with a cylindrical root, widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The optimal time for sowing Achyranthes is between late June and mid-July. Cultivating Achyranthes, particularly the wheat variety, can be an effective way to boost income for farmers. Below are the main technical guidelines for growing this valuable plant: After fertilization, the soil should be deeply tilled, with 2,500 kg of organic fertilizer applied per acre, along with 50 kg of superphosphate and 20 kg of rapeseed cake. The planting area should be kept at a width of 1.3 meters and a row spacing of 30 cm. It’s important to create good drainage ditches to prevent waterlogging. Before sowing, seeds should be soaked in warm water for 4 to 5 hours, then mixed with a small amount of fire ash and thoroughly combined. Shallow furrows should be made on the surface, spaced 25 to 30 cm apart. The seed mixture is evenly distributed in the furrows and covered with a thin layer of fine soil. During dry periods, a light layer of chaff or wheat straw can be placed on top to help retain moisture and aid germination. Field management includes several key steps. First, one and a half months after sowing, a combination of weeding and soil cultivation is carried out, followed by the first top dressing: 1,500 kg of livestock manure compost per acre (or 10 kg of urea). A second top dressing is applied during the period of vigorous growth, using 2,000 kg of manure water (or 15 kg of urea) along with 50 kg of superphosphate. Flower picking is also essential. When the plants reach a height of 50 cm, the top inflorescences should be removed to concentrate nutrients in the roots. Proper irrigation and drainage are crucial. In case of heavy rain, drainage should be ensured promptly. After September, when the main root stops growing, adequate watering is necessary during dry spells. Common diseases include leaf spot and root rot. To manage these, reduce field humidity and spray affected leaves with a 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture or 65% zearazine diluted 500 times. For root rot, use 50% carbendazim diluted 1,000 times or 5% lime milk. Nematode disease can be prevented by disinfecting the soil before sowing, applying 3% methyl isothiocyanate at a rate of 5 kg per acre. Pests such as the elm leaf beetle, red spider mite, and stinkbug can be controlled with sprays like 90% trichlorfon diluted 1,000 times or 40% dimethoate at the same dilution. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to maintaining healthy crops. With proper care and attention, Achyranthes can thrive and provide both medicinal value and economic benefits.
