Best slaughter period for meat animals

Meat livestock refers to various animals raised primarily for their meat, including pigs, cattle, dogs, chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Each species has an optimal time for slaughter based on growth patterns, feed efficiency, and meat quality. Understanding these factors helps maximize economic returns while ensuring high-quality meat production. Pigs grow at a slower rate initially, then accelerate in the middle stages, and slow down again as they approach maturity. When pigs reach about 100 kg, their weight gain stabilizes. Beyond that, daily gains decrease, and by 150 kg, weight gain becomes minimal. Slaughtering too early may result in low yield and poor meat quality, while slaughtering too late increases feed costs and reduces profitability. In China, local breeds are best slaughtered around 75 kg, offering superior meat quality and higher dressing percentages. Crossbred pigs, such as those from local sows and lean meat bulls, are ideal for slaughter at 7–8 months of age, weighing between 90–100 kg. For beef cattle, studies show that crossbred calves, like those from Charolais bulls and local cows, experience a decline in daily weight gain after six months. The fastest muscle growth occurs in the first 6–8 months, after which growth slows, and feed efficiency decreases. Therefore, the best time to slaughter beef cattle is between 1.5 to 2 years of age, when economic returns are highest. Sheep and goats follow seasonal growth patterns. Lambs typically gain the most weight in September, reaching around 40 kg, while goats reach about 25 kg. The best time to slaughter them is at the end of September or early October. To meet holiday market demands, farmers can supplement feeding to ensure better weight gain and sell at premium prices during January and February. Meat dogs used to be raised for 8 months before slaughter, but this often led to poor economic returns. Modern breeding practices have improved efficiency, allowing dogs to be raised for only 4 months, reaching 20 kg. At this stage, they grow quickly, convert feed efficiently, and produce high-quality meat. Overfeeding leads to slower growth and lower profits. Broiler chickens grow rapidly in the early stages, with hens reaching peak growth at 7 weeks and roosters at 9 weeks. After this, weight gain slows, and feed conversion rates drop. Premature slaughter (e.g., at 6 weeks) may result in smaller muscles and lower meat yield. Currently, broilers are best slaughtered at 6–7 weeks, weighing 1.9–2 kg, offering the best balance of feed efficiency and meat quality. Ducks are usually marketed at 7 weeks, weighing up to 2.5 kg. For cut meat or export, they should be slaughtered at 8 weeks when chest muscles are well-developed. The timing depends on the target market, but meat ducks must be at least 8 weeks old before slaughter. Rabbits are best slaughtered at 3 months of age, weighing 2–2.5 kg. Leaving them too long reduces annual production and affects meat quality. Proper timing ensures both productivity and high-quality meat output.
