Large knob blue orchid (Figure)

Oncidium ampliatum, commonly known as the Dancing Orchid or Dainippon Orchid, is a striking member of the Orchidaceae family. This perennial herb features large, densely clustered pseudobulbs that are flat-ovate to oblate in shape, typically measuring around 12.5 cm in length and often marked with red or brown spots. The plant usually has 1 to 3 leaves, which are elliptic-lanceolate in form, reaching up to 37 cm in length and 12.5 cm in width. The stems grow upright or curved, sometimes branching, and can produce numerous flowers. Each bloom is approximately 2.5 cm in diameter, displaying vibrant yellow petals with contrasting white, brown, or red markings. Although blue orchids available in cultivation today are all hybrids, Oncidium ampliatum remains one of the most popular cut flower varieties worldwide due to its long blooming period, vivid colors, and unique floral appearance. Native to tropical regions of America, this orchid thrives in warm, humid climates with plenty of sunlight. It is commonly grown in pots or on raised beds using substrates such as fern roots, moss, volcanic ash, and bark. Propagation is typically done through ramets or tissue culture. During spring, summer, and autumn, regular fertilization and irrigation are essential for healthy growth. In winter, it's important to maintain temperatures above 15°C to ensure the plant's survival. With proper care, this beautiful orchid can bring color and elegance to any garden or floral arrangement.
