Sleeping bamboo
The red-backed bamboo pheasant, also known as the red-back bamboo vine, is a striking plant native to Brazil. It thrives in warm, humid, and partially shaded environments, and is not tolerant of cold temperatures or drought. It prefers fertile, loose soil or peat-based substrates, and requires winter temperatures to remain above 10°C for optimal growth.
Propagation is commonly done through rhizomes or cuttings. During April and May, rhizomes are planted in clusters to encourage dense growth. For cuttings, it's best to take the upper internodes from the mother plant during the mildew season. These cuttings can then be inserted into a mix of compost, leaf soil, or peat until roots develop, after which they can be transplanted into pots.
During the growing season, it's important to mist the foliage regularly to maintain humidity. Fertilize once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer. In summer, provide shade to protect the plant from direct sunlight, and ensure that water does not accumulate in the pot. Remove any yellow or dead leaves promptly to prevent disease. In winter, the plant benefits from plenty of sunlight, and watering should be reduced slightly to avoid overwatering.
Common pests include leaf spot and leaf blight, which can be controlled by spraying a 65% zinc oxide wettable powder solution diluted to 600 times. Scale insects may occasionally appear, and these can be managed using 50% imidacloprid at a 1000-fold dilution.
