Rhododendron, commonly known as heather rhododendron or tree-like rhododendron, has become one of the most popular potted plants in recent years. Originating from countries like the Netherlands and Belgium, this variety stands out for its large, dense blooms that resemble a giant flower ball when in full bloom. Its lush appearance makes it ideal for indoor decoration, such as in halls, restaurants, and hotels, where it adds a sense of grandeur and elegance. This evergreen shrub belongs to the azalea group and typically features a compact, well-branched structure with a full crown. The leaves are elliptical or lance-shaped, glossy, and often have golden stripes or borders. They are densely arranged at the top of branches and covered with fine hairs, giving them a soft texture. The inflorescence is umbrella-shaped, with flowers blooming in clusters. When fully open, the blossoms can reach 15 to 20 cm in diameter, with some species even growing larger. The flowers come in a wide range of colors, including purple, red, pink, orange, white, and yellow, and they bloom naturally from March to May. With proper care, artificial flowering can be achieved as early as January or February, with each plant maintaining its bloom for about a month. Native to high-altitude regions in southwestern China, rhododendrons thrive in cool, humid environments. They prefer temperatures between 15°C and 25°C and are not tolerant of drought, intense heat, or waterlogged soil. After flowering, it's important to remove spent blooms and prune back the branches to encourage new growth. Watering should follow a "do not do it, do it thoroughly" principle, avoiding both overwatering and dryness. In dry conditions, misting the plants and surrounding area can help increase humidity. During summer, when temperatures rise above 30°C, rhododendrons may experience growth inhibition, and above 35°C, they can suffer from heat stress. To protect them, move the plants to a shaded, well-ventilated area and mist them to lower temperature and maintain moisture. In rainy seasons, ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot and avoid fertilizing. Once the weather cools down, resume regular watering and feeding while increasing light exposure. In winter, rhododendrons can tolerate temperatures as low as 0°C but prefer cooler conditions below 15°C to support healthy flower bud development. Repotting every 1 to 2 years is recommended, using loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. A mix of leaf mold, peat, and vermiculite or sand works well, with a pH between 5.0 and 6.0. Propagation can be done through cuttings or tissue culture for large-scale production. When potting, avoid pressing the substrate too tightly to ensure good aeration. Minimal pruning is needed initially, but once roots develop and new shoots appear, strategic pruning encourages bushier growth. In warm, humid conditions, rhododendrons are susceptible to diseases like stem rot and brown spot. These can be controlled with fungicides like carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl. Yellowing leaves may result from iron deficiency or alkaline soil, which can be prevented by adding ferrous sulfate during watering or fertilizing. Pests such as spider mites and armyworms are common in summer and autumn; spraying with 40% omethoate diluted to 1000–1500 times can effectively manage infestations.
