Winter and spring livestock and poultry should feed sprout feed

Winter and spring are challenging seasons for livestock and poultry feeding, as green feed becomes scarce, and the lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin deficiencies. These deficiencies disrupt the animals' metabolism, causing growth stagnation, weakened immunity, and even illness or death. To address this issue, farmers can prepare their own vitamin-rich supplement feed—germinating feed. This method is not only cost-effective but also highly nutritious. Below are the techniques for making and using sprouting feed. Common cereal seeds such as barley, oats, corn, and rice can be used as raw materials, with barley being the most widely used. The process is similar to sprouting beans. First, select and clean the seeds, then soak them in warm water (20–25°C) for a few hours. After soaking, place the seeds in a container covered with a breathable cloth like gauze or sackcloth. Each day, spray them with warm water (around 30°C) 4 to 6 times, and gently turn them to ensure even moisture. Within 2 to 3 days, the seeds will begin to sprout. At this point, remove the covering and continue watering twice daily. After 3 to 5 days, the sprouts will be ready for use. During germination, the nutritional profile of the grains improves significantly. Starch is converted into maltose, proteins break down into easily digestible amino compounds, and levels of carotenoids, riboflavin, and vitamin E increase. For example, 1 kg of sprouted barley contains 28 mg of beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A), 250 mg of B vitamins, and 17 mg of niacin. This transformation makes sprouted feed a rich source of essential nutrients, greatly enhancing its value as a vitamin supplement. The timing of harvesting sprouts depends on the intended purpose. If the goal is to boost B-vitamin intake and improve palatability, harvest the sprouts when they reach 2 to 3 cm in length. For higher carotenoid content, allow them to grow up to 8 to 10 cm. In practice, feeding sprouted feed has shown great benefits. For breeding females, 150 to 250 grams per day can enhance estrus, pregnancy rates, and milk production. For males, 100 to 200 grams per day improves sexual performance, semen quality, and fertility. Young animals, such as piglets (30–40 grams per day) or chicks (10–20 grams for young chickens or 3–4 grams for chicks), benefit from improved growth, immunity, and survival rates. Laying hens fed 10–20 grams of sprouted feed daily show increased egg production, better hatchability, and higher fertilization rates. Sprouted feed is also ideal for sick animals, as it is easy to digest and provides essential nutrients during recovery. It can be chopped, cut into small pieces, or mixed directly into the diet, allowing animals to eat freely. This simple yet effective method helps maintain health and productivity throughout the winter and spring seasons.
