Then, a thin cryoprobe is inserted through the skin into the tumor site. Argon gas is released through the probe, creating an "ice ball" that freezes and destroys the cancerous tissue. This method is typically done under local anesthesia and sedation, rather than full general anesthesia, making it a more comfortable option for many patients. The results of the trial showed that percutaneous cryoablation had a slightly lower tumor recurrence rate (12.5% vs. 10.5%) compared to laparoscopic surgery. Patients also experienced shorter hospital stays and no major complications. Additionally, the cost of treatment was significantly lower—about 59.5% less than laparoscopic procedures. These findings suggest that cryoablation could be a viable and more cost-effective option for certain patients with kidney tumors. The study was presented at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology in Seattle, Washington, in March 2007.
