Geese reproductive performance characteristics

Goose breeding exhibits a clear seasonal pattern. Most goose breeds experience a natural break in yolk development and ovulation between June and September, when temperatures rise and daylight increases. During this time, the ovaries shrink and the birds enter a resting phase until late autumn. Egg production typically resumes when the weather cools down, with the main laying season occurring from September to October and continuing through April to May. Nesting behavior is another notable trait among geese. Many Chinese goose breeds are known for their strong nesting instincts. However, most large and medium-sized breeds, as well as some smaller ones, are relatively lazy in terms of nesting. After laying a clutch of 8 to 12 eggs, they often stop nesting and wait until the goslings hatch before starting again. Geese also display selective mating behavior. When raised in small groups, male goslings tend to pair with specific females. Once regrouped, unfamiliar males and females may avoid each other and refuse to mate. This selectivity is more pronounced in larger goose breeds and can significantly affect fertility rates. To improve breeding success, it's important to keep geese together from a young age so they can develop bonds and form a sense of familiarity, which enhances mating efficiency. However, the degree of selectivity varies by breed, with larger flocks generally being less picky. Lastly, geese are long-lived birds with a delayed sexual maturity. Medium and small goose breeds usually reach sexual maturity at 6 to 8 months, while larger breeds take longer. Female geese can remain productive for up to five years, and males can be used for breeding for over three years. This longevity makes them valuable for long-term breeding programs.
