Anti-falling eggplant
In order to prevent eggplants from falling over, it's common practice for growers to use bamboo or wooden stakes to support the plants once they reach about 30 cm in height. Many farmers simply insert the stakes directly into the soil, a few centimeters away from the plant, and then tie the stems to them. This method helps keep the plants upright and strong.
However, while visiting Dongdanhe Village in Datian Town, Shouguang City, Shandong Province, the author noticed something unusual. Mr. Li, a local farmer, was not using vertical supports but instead had a slanted system. Intrigued, the author asked him about it.
Mr. Li explained that he used to rely on vertical stakes as well. But he found that this approach encouraged excessive upward growth, making the plants too tall and weak. As a result, many farmers delayed planting, which led to taller plants that were more prone to lodging when they reached their full height.
To solve this issue, Mr. Li developed a new technique. Instead of using vertical supports, he inserted bamboo poles at an angle—about 60 degrees from the ground. The poles were placed 10 cm away from the plant on the southern side and extended diagonally toward the north. Each pole was around 40 cm long. Once in place, the plant was tied to the diagonal pole, ensuring it also grew at a 60-degree angle.
This method encourages the plant to grow in a slightly inclined position, which helps prevent lodging and reduces the risk of overly vigorous top growth. By limiting apical dominance, the plants become more compact, stronger, and more resistant to diseases. It’s a simple yet effective adjustment that has helped Mr. Li improve his crop quality and reduce losses due to weak or falling plants.
