The best soil texture for farming is loam, as it offers a balanced structure that retains moisture and nutrients while allowing proper drainage. All types of manure can be used, but the choice depends on the soil type. For clay soils, which are heavy and tend to compact easily, it's advisable to use organic matter with high content but lower nutrient levels, such as cow, sheep, or pig manure. These help improve soil structure without overwhelming the soil with excessive nutrients.
Sandy soils, on the other hand, suffer from rapid nutrient leaching due to their coarse texture. To counter this, it's better to apply manures rich in organic matter but with moderate nutrient content, like cow or sheep dung. These materials help retain moisture and slowly release nutrients over time.
Chicken and duck manure contains around 25% organic matter and is considered a "hot" manure because it generates more heat during decomposition. It’s ideal for deep soils with low salt ion concentration. However, it should be fully composted before use, as it can attract pests and may cause damage if applied raw. Once matured, it can be used as both base fertilizer and top dressing.
Sheep manure has about 20% organic matter and a balanced nutrient profile. It acts quickly and is suitable for all soil types and crops. When fully decomposed, it works well as a base fertilizer and can also be used for side-dressing.
Cow manure, while rich in organic matter, takes longer to break down and releases nutrients slowly. It has a lower fermentation temperature, making it a “cold†fertilizer. With a high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, it may compete with plants for nitrogen during decomposition. Therefore, it's recommended to combine it with quick-release nitrogen fertilizers. Fully decomposed cow manure is best used as a base fertilizer to improve soil structure and long-term fertility.
Pig manure is highly nutritious, with the highest potassium content among farmyard manures. Its nitrogen and phosphorus levels are second only to sheep manure. The fine texture and high ammonia bacteria content make it easy to decompose, leading to a fast fertilizer effect. It promotes humus formation and improves soil quality effectively. Pig manure is a warm fertilizer, suitable for all soil types and crops. Once fully decomposed, it can be used as a base fertilizer or for top dressing.
