Myrtle
Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, commonly known as the mountain gun or simply gun, is a member of the Myrtaceae family, also referred to as the myrtle family. This evergreen shrub is native to regions such as South China, the Indochinese Peninsula, Japan, and the Philippines. It thrives in sunny and warm, humid climates but is also fairly drought-tolerant. The plant prefers acidic soils and typically grows to a height of about 2 meters.
The young branches are densely covered with fine hairs, giving them a soft texture. The leaves are opposite, usually elliptical or obovate in shape, and have a glossy appearance. The flowers appear in clusters of 1–3 per leaf axil, starting as rose-red buds and opening into white blossoms with a diameter of 2–5 cm. The flowering season usually runs from May to August, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardens.
After flowering, the plant produces spherical berries. Propagation can be done through seeds, which should be sown after harvesting. It generally takes around three years for the plant to bloom. Alternatively, wild seedlings can be transplanted in early spring before they start growing, with some light pruning after planting to improve survival rates.
Like many flowering plants, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa is susceptible to beetle damage, so regular monitoring and preventive measures are recommended. Its large, colorful blooms and attractive fruits make it a versatile addition to gardens. Whether planted alone, in groups, or alongside other flowering shrubs, it adds visual interest to lawns, slopes, or garden beds.
