Vegetable seedlings are more harmful than planting

The higher the market price of vegetables, the more incentive there is for farmers to grow them. Many vegetable growers start preparing seedlings early in order to take advantage of favorable timing. However, they often wait until the seedlings have developed 8 to 10 true leaves before planting. While large seedlings may allow for an earlier first harvest, this approach can be counterproductive in the long run. It's difficult to develop strong, healthy plants, and the yield in later stages tends to be lower, ultimately causing more harm than good. First, transplanting large seedlings can hinder flower bud formation in mid to late-season vegetables. Most vegetables begin their flower bud differentiation when they have 2 or 3 true leaves. By the time they reach 6 to 7 true leaves, this process is already well underway, reaching a critical stage that determines the final yield and quality. If the seedlings are not transplanted at this point, they can grow up to 25–30 cm tall, becoming crowded and shaded. This reduces photosynthesis and increases the risk of leggy growth, which negatively affects flower bud development and significantly lowers yields in the mid to late season. Second, large seedlings tend to have slow root development and are more prone to root diseases. When transplanted, these plants experience reduced photosynthesis, leading to lower production of essential nutrients. Their roots struggle to absorb enough water and minerals from the soil, making it hard for the plant to support its above-ground growth. As a result, the seedlings grow slowly and remain weak for a long time. Additionally, weak roots mean lower resistance to diseases, increasing the risk of soil-borne infections that can lead to plant death. In contrast, seedlings with 4 to 6 true leaves adapt more quickly to the new environment, establish roots faster, and show better growth. For this reason, it’s important for farmers to choose appropriately sized seedlings for planting. Proper timing and careful selection can make a big difference in overall crop performance and profitability.
