Autumn potted plant focuses on conservation
In the autumn, potted flowers continue to bloom beautifully. However, proper care is essential to ensure their health and vitality, as different plants have varying needs during this season.
Watering and fertilizing should be done with care during the cooler autumn months. The temperature fluctuates significantly between day and night, and water in the pots evaporates more slowly. It's generally recommended to water once a day, but overwatering can lead to root rot and yellowing leaves, while under-watering may cause drooping foliage and weak growth. Aim to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Most potted plants are still in their active growing phase during autumn, so applying a diluted liquid fertilizer every 10 days is ideal. For flowering plants like sweet osmanthus, chrysanthemums, and dahlias, it's better to use fertilizers high in phosphorus and potassium rather than nitrogen, as this encourages blooming and strong leaf development.
Pruning is also an important task during this time. If plants produce too many shoots, they should be trimmed appropriately to prevent unnecessary nutrient loss. For the remaining shoots, pinching back the axillary buds can help promote bushier growth. Strong-growing plants may benefit from more aggressive pruning, while weaker ones should be lightly cut back. However, for plants that form flower buds in autumn, such as plum blossoms, wax berries, and azaleas, avoid cutting them back completely. Proper pruning helps the plant store nutrients, supports future growth, and strengthens its ability to withstand colder weather.
As temperatures begin to drop and daylight decreases, some plants may become more vulnerable. Inadequate light, improper temperature, or imbalanced watering and fertilizing can weaken the plants. Certain tropical plants, like jasmine, hibiscus, poinsettia, and gardenia, are sensitive to cold and can suffer from frost damage. To protect them, place them in sunny, sheltered spots. When temperatures fall below 5°C, bring them indoors where they can receive enough sunlight. Taking these precautions ensures your potted plants remain healthy and vibrant throughout the season.
