Autumn potted plant focuses on conservation
In autumn, potted flowers continue to bloom beautifully. However, proper care is essential to ensure their health and vitality. Each plant has unique needs, so it's important to adjust your maintenance routine accordingly.
Watering in the cooler autumn climate should be done carefully. The temperature fluctuates significantly between day and night, and water in the pots evaporates slowly. It’s generally recommended to water once a day. Overwatering can lead to root rot, causing yellowing leaves, while under-watering may result in drooping foliage and weak growth. Aim to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
During this time, most potted plants are in their active growth phase. Fertilizing every 10 days with a diluted liquid fertilizer is usually sufficient. For flowering varieties like sweet osmanthus, chrysanthemums, and dahlias, it's better to use more phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizers rather than high-nitrogen ones. This helps promote blooming and strong foliage development.
Pruning is also an important part of autumn care. Excessive new growth can drain nutrients from the plant, so it's wise to trim back unnecessary shoots. For the remaining growth, pinch off the axillary buds to encourage bushier growth. Strong-growing plants may need more aggressive pruning, while weaker ones should be handled gently. Plants that form flower buds in autumn, such as plum blossoms, wax berries, and azaleas, should not be pruned or topped, as this could damage their future blooms.
After the cold dew season, plants may become more sensitive to environmental stress. Insufficient light, improper temperatures, or imbalanced watering and fertilizing can weaken them. Some tropical plants, like jasmine, hibiscus, poinsettia, and begonias, are not frost-tolerant. To protect them, place them in sunny, sheltered spots. When temperatures drop below 5°C, bring them indoors where they can receive enough sunlight.
Proper care during autumn not only keeps your potted plants healthy but also prepares them for the coming seasons. With attention to watering, fertilizing, pruning, and protection from cold, you can enjoy vibrant blooms and strong growth all year round.
