Dried flowers and preservation technology

After the flowers are harvested, they should be processed and dried immediately for long-term preservation. The following is a detailed method to ensure quality and longevity. First, steam the flowers. Choose fresh, high-quality blooms and rinse them gently with water. After drying, place them in a steamer. Each layer should not exceed 7.5 cm in thickness to ensure even steaming. This step helps preserve the color and structure of the flowers. Next, smoke the flowers. Place the steamed flowers into a smoking chamber and steam for about 5–6 minutes. It's important to keep the water level sufficient to avoid burning. Steam once per batch, and always use clean water to maintain quality. Third, dry the flowers. Once steamed, the flowers will take on a flat, round shape. To retain their form, manually adjust them before drying. A vacuum dryer is recommended for best results—leave them inverted for 1–2 days to maintain shape. Alternatively, you can air-dry them for 4–5 days, but this may lead to deformation and loss of fragrance. Many flower farmers now use the plastic shed vacuum method. This involves using a blower or vacuum pump to remove moisture efficiently, which speeds up the drying process while preserving quality. Fourth, storage. Prepare a stock solution by mixing 100 ml of acetic acid saturated with acetyl acetate and 400 ml of distilled water. Another option is combining 75 ml of saturated copper sulfate solution with 150 ml of formaldehyde and 150 ml of distilled water. For the preservative solution, mix 90 ml of sulfuric acid with 10 ml of formaldehyde, or 90 ml of sulfurous acid with a small amount of boric acid and 120 ml of distilled water (magnesium chloride can also be used instead of boric acid). To store the flowers, soak them in the stock solution for 10–20 hours, or briefly immerse them in the solution at 70–80°C for 2–3 minutes. Cold soaking is suitable for flowers, while hot immersion works better for leaves, roots, and stems. Afterward, place the flowers in the preservative solution for long-term preservation. These stored flowers can last 2–4 months longer than regular dried flowers. Today, dried flowers are often soaked in the preservative solution for 24 hours, then placed in a vacuum-sealed plastic shed. Every 10 days, they are sprayed with a 3%–5% formaldehyde solution to maintain freshness. For fruit biological specimens, soak them first in a solution made by dissolving 50 g of zinc chloride in 100 ml of water, then add 25 ml of formaldehyde and 25 ml of glycerol. This helps retain the original color and texture of the specimen. Author: Shandong Linqing Third High School Experimental Complex Building
