From late August to early October, sweet potato roots enter their active growth phase during the spring and summer seasons. This period is critical for yield development and requires the most nutrients. To maximize productivity, three effective top-dressing methods can be applied.
First, the hole injection method: use a small tool or a surgical file to dig a 30 cm deep hole about 20-30 cm away from the main root. Place an appropriate amount of a balanced NPK compound fertilizer into the hole and cover it with moist soil. For better results, make holes on both sides of the ridge. This technique can boost yields by approximately 20%.
Second, the crack application method: when the soil starts to crack due to root expansion, apply a nutrient solution directly into the cracks. Mix 500 grams of potassium dihydrogen phosphate with 400 kg of water, or combine 2.5 kg of urea with 10 kg of superphosphate and dilute in 500 kg of water. Apply about 0.7–1 kg per area. After two weeks, mix 100 kg of wood ash with 500 kg of water (soaked for 4 hours), filter the liquid, and apply it again. This method can increase yields by over 300 kg per acre.
Third, the foliar spray method: spray a foliar solution containing 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or alternatively, 2.5% potassium sulfate, 10% herb ash, 2% sulfuric acid, or equivalent concentrations of superphosphate and urea. Spray once a week for best results. This method can improve yield by 18% to 20%.
These methods are practical and widely used by farmers to ensure healthy root development and higher production. Choosing the right technique based on soil conditions and plant needs can significantly enhance the quality and quantity of the harvest.
