Radishes come in a variety of high-quality types, such as White Jade Spring, Early Spring Large/Small Root, April Students, and Small Government. These varieties are imported from abroad and are known for their resilience to cold temperatures, rain, and sunlight. They are less likely to crack, and even if they do, the damage is minimal. For spring planting, these radishes can be grown in large or medium greenhouses, or in small sheds. Secondly, timely planting is essential. Based on the characteristics of each variety and local climate conditions, it's important to plan the sowing period to meet the off-season market demand for radishes between 4 to 5 months. In greenhouse or shed cultivation, early February is ideal for planting, with harvests ready by late April. For soil preparation, the first choice is sandy loam with deep soil, good drainage, and rich fertility. It’s also important that the previous crop was not a cruciferous plant, such as cabbage, cauliflower, or autumn radish. Spring radishes have a high yield and long roots, and during the later growth stages, they tend to develop upward-exposed shoulders. Therefore, "two plowings and two hilling" practices are recommended. The first plowing should be deeper to break up large soil clods, while the second plowing combines with base fertilization—2000 kilograms of manure per acre and 50 kg of compound fertilizer should be fully mixed and leveled. Ridge planting is preferred, with 2–3 seeds planted per hole. After sowing, maintaining a higher temperature before germination is crucial. Daytime temperatures should be between 20°C and 25°C, and nighttime temperatures between 10°C and 13°C. To help achieve this, plastic film can be used to cover the soil and increase warmth. Once the seedlings emerge, the film can be removed, but temperatures should remain above 8°C to 10°C; otherwise, prolonged cold can cause cracking. After emergence, thinning is necessary to prevent overcrowding. Typically, 2–3 leaves are present at the time of thinning, leaving strong seedlings per hole. A diluted human and animal manure solution should be applied after the first top dressing, followed by another application after the second top dressing. Pest control is essential. Use 10% Scorpion Net (such as One-time Net, Dagong Chen, Imidacloprid, Kang Fuduo) to control aphids. For yellow caterpillars, cabbage worms, and armyworm larvae, use 2.5% enemy to kill. Agricultural streptomycin helps prevent black rot. Finally, spring radishes should be harvested before they start to crack to avoid damage. Winter radishes can still be harvested normally when the plants reach 15–20 cm in height. Timely harvesting ensures better quality and marketability.
