Usage and maintenance of power drainage and irrigation units

Before using the equipment, it is essential to perform a thorough inspection to ensure safe and efficient operation. First, check the environment around the equipment room and the unit itself. Remove any obstacles that could interfere with normal operation. Avoid swimming in the pool and clear debris from the pool and suction pipe regularly. If the unit is installed outdoors or in a damp area, inspect the sunshade, rain protection, and moisture resistance. Regularly measure the insulation resistance of the motor and dry it if necessary. Next, verify that all components are in good working condition. Ensure that bolt connections are tight and couplings are secure. Check that the bearing lubricant is clean and sufficient, and that the oil quality meets specifications. Confirm that the packing is properly filled and the gland is correctly adjusted. Manually turn the unit to check for smooth operation and listen for any unusual noises or friction. Then, examine the electrical system. Use a voltmeter to measure the insulation resistance between the windings and the casing, which should be at least 5 MΩ. If the reading is below 0.5 MΩ, the motor may be damp and needs drying. Check the starting equipment, fuses, and protective devices to ensure they are in good condition. Pay close attention to the wiring configuration on the motor nameplate—whether it's star (Y) or delta (△)—and never connect it incorrectly. Close the fuse and switch, then check the power supply voltage. According to regulations, the voltage should not deviate more than 5% from the rated value, and the difference between the three phases should not exceed 5%. Perform a test start-up to observe whether the motor starts properly, rotates in the correct direction, and operates smoothly without noise or vibration. If the motor fails to start, investigate both the electrical and mechanical systems. If the rotation is reversed, swap any two of the three power lines. If any issues arise during operation, immediately stop the unit and address the problem. During operation, pay attention to several key factors. When starting a centrifugal pump, ensure the gate valve is closed first. Open the valve only after the standby unit is running smoothly, and keep the opening time short (3–5 minutes) to prevent overheating. Axial and mixed flow pumps should start with the gate valve open. Monitor the unit for unusual sounds or vibrations, as these may indicate potential failures. Regularly check the bearing temperature, and stop the unit if it becomes too hot. Issues like improper oil levels, poor oil quality, or contaminants can cause overheating. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for oil changes. Monitor the meter pointer to detect sudden changes, which may signal a problem. Inspect the pump packing for proper tightness and adjust it so that water drips slowly. Check the inlet pipe joints for leaks and ensure they are secure. Observe the water level in the tank and shut down the unit if it drops below the minimum level to avoid damaging the pump. Keep the pool free of weeds and debris. When stopping a centrifugal pump, close the gate valve first before turning off the power. Do not allow the pump to stop while the valve is open. During periods of inactivity, drain all water from the pump and pipes. If possible, disassemble the pump and pipes, clean them, apply rust-preventative paint, and store them in a dry place. Inspect bearings for wear, replace damaged ones, and clean and re-grease the rest. Check the impeller for cracks or cavitation, and inspect the pump shaft for bending or wear. Repair or replace as needed. Examine the clearance between the impeller and the leakage ring. If the clearance is too large, replace or repair the ring. If the unit uses a belt drive, remove the belt and store it in a dry, ventilated area, away from oily substances. Check the motor, electrical distribution system, and wiring for damage, and repair or replace as necessary. Clean and maintain the filler material, repairing or replacing it if needed. If the pump and pipes cannot be removed, cover the outlet to prevent debris from entering. Store any removed screws and nuts by coating them with waste oil or soaking them in diesel to protect against corrosion.
