How to use the roof culture goldfish

In recent years, utilizing the flat roof of a concrete house to raise goldfish has become a practical and profitable way for urban residents to make use of their spare time. This method not only helps reduce unemployment but also offers an opportunity for people with surplus time or resources to generate income. Setting up a rooftop fish farm is both economical and environmentally friendly, especially in densely populated cities where space is limited. The construction of a fish pond typically ranges from 5 to 20 square meters, with a water depth of about 30 cm and pool walls standing between 40 cm to 50 cm. These ponds are arranged in rows and kept independent to facilitate management and disease prevention. A one-meter-high storage tank (also known as a sun bath) should be built, with its water capacity equal to half of that of a single fish pond. The base of the tank should be coated with No. 200 cement mortar, approximately 3 to 5 cm thick, to prevent leakage. After the bottom and walls are smoothed with plain cement paste, brickwork can be used for the side walls—using bricks of sizes like 24cm, 12cm, or 6cm, which makes it easier to walk on and place flowerpots. Drainage pipes should also be installed for efficient water management. To protect the fish from excessive heat during summer, shade structures should be set up above the pools. These sheds should be 1 to 2 meters above the pool walls and designed to withstand wind and rain. Vines, sponge gourds, squash, or other flowering plants can be grown on the sheds to provide natural shade and improve the aesthetic appeal of the area. Five days before introducing the fish, they should be disinfected using 20 grams of bleaching powder per cubic meter of water. Before entering the pond, the goldfish should be dipped in a 3% saline solution to sterilize them. The stocking density varies depending on the size of the fish: around 100–200 fish per square meter for fry measuring 2 cm, 50–100 for 5 cm, and 10–20 for 10 cm. Fry can either be bred at home or purchased from a reliable supplier. Goldfish are omnivorous, so artificial compound feed is commonly used in commercial farming. Several preparation methods are available: (1) Mix rice bran and wheat bran with steamed shrimp powder, then form into pellets after cooling. (2) Combine 40% fish meal with 60% wheat bran, add 0.1% yeast powder, 1–2% binder, steam, and process into pellets. (3) Grind wheat flour, soybean cake, fish meal, and shrimp powder into a paste, add alum, dry, and crush into floating feed. Feed once daily in the afternoon, adjusting the amount based on the "three observations": observe how quickly the fish eat, the weather conditions, and the fish's activity level. Adjust feeding accordingly to ensure optimal health and growth. Water changes are essential to maintain clean and oxygen-rich water. If the water turns yellow, pink-gray, black, or green, or if there is a foul smell, it’s time to change the water. For rooftop goldfish, tap water is usually used. When changing, replace 1/4 to 1/3 of the water and spray directly. If the pond dries completely, the fish should be returned immediately, and the new water should be left to sit for more than a day to reduce chlorine levels and temperature differences. Avoid rushing the process; using a suction pipe to remove dirt and add fresh water is recommended. Maintain a light green color in the pond for optimal conditions. Disease prevention is crucial. Common diseases include saprophytic disease, gill disease, vertical scale disease, and tail rot. Prevention measures include cleaning and disinfecting the pond before stocking, sterilizing the fish, adding antibiotics to the feed, keeping the water clear and free from decay, isolating new fish, managing shade plants to enhance cooling, and treating any signs of illness promptly. With proper care and attention, a rooftop goldfish farm can be both profitable and rewarding.
