Combined nanomachines simulate human muscle movement

Recently, a research team at the Charles Sutton Institute of the National Academy of Sciences (CNRS) assembled thousands of nanomachines to produce coordinated contractile relaxation like muscle fibers with an extension of about 10 microns. The "nano machine" created by nature is a biomolecule composed of extremely complex proteins that participate in the basic life functions of living things, such as transporting ions, synthesizing ATP (energy molecules), and cell division. Now, the research team led by Professor Nicholas Giuseppeni of the University of Strasbourg, France, has successfully synthesized a long polymer chain that combines thousands of nanomachines through supramolecular bonds. Nanomachines can produce linear stretching motions of about 1 nanometer. Under the influence of pH, their simulated motion can cause 10 micron contraction or relaxation of the entire polymer chain, so the various movements are correspondingly magnified 10,000 times, just like in muscle tissue.
This nano-polymerized chain was accurately measured by biometric methods at the University of Diderot's Materials and Complex Systems Laboratory.
The researchers point out that this result will open up broad prospects for many applications, such as micro-robots, nano-information storage, synthetic muscles, etc. These assembleable nanomachines can also be used to design other materials with novel mechanical properties.
